Can You Sweat off Weight?

If you've ever exercised and gotten sweaty and then weighed yourself immediately after, you've probably noticed that your weight drops a bit in this situation. While losing "water weight" as a result of sweating will bring your total weight down marginally, it's not a healthy way to lose weight.

As your body loses water and nutrients through sweat, your total weight will drop by a very small amount. Because of this, some weight loss programs encourage people to wear heavy clothing in hot temperatures or while working out in order to sweat more. While this may make you lose a bit more weight while you're working out, you'll gain it back immediately when you rehydrate by drinking water or other fluids.

Excessive sweating while exercising or in a hot location can actually be dangerous for your body. This is because it can leave you dehydrated, forcing your body to take emergency measures in order to keep you conscious. If dehydration persists, you may face serious health consequences. You'll also likely not be able to continue exercising, which will reduce your ability to lose weight through a healthy manner while you're sweating excessively.
