Dancing for Beginners: The Best Moves for Working Out

Dancing engages your mind, moves your senses and gives you a rigorous workout. You don’t even have to go anywhere to dance. You don't need special clothes or equipment. In fact, you can perform your dance workout in your very own living room. Put on your favorite enlivening music and get started. Here are the best workout dance moves for beginning dancers:

A Dance Warm Up

With any workout, you’ll want to first warm up. With your knees shoulder distance apart, bend your knees slightly and move your hips to the right and then left. Keep the hips moving back and forth to the beat. After two dozen repetitions, push the hips to the front of the room and then back. Keep your knees slightly bent the whole time. Once your hips are warm, circle them to the right, back, left and front. Then reverse the circular motion. With agile hips, you’re ready to try some belly dance moves like Shakira or move to your favorite funky music.

Rockette Kicks

The Rockettes are known for their dazzling high kicks. Don’t worry about kicking your legs that high in the beginning. Kick one leg and then the other to the rhythm of the music. As your agility improves, you’ll be able to kick higher and higher eventually.

Dance Improv

The beauty of dance as a workout is that you can get creative and move as your body desires. Perform memorable moves from your favorite era. Whether you do the running man or the Macarena, all that matters is that you keep moving. Challenge yourself with faster music and more complicated rhythms.

Dancing is a great workout because it gets you moving and you can be creative--there are no wrong moves. And dancing around to your favorite playlist will make your workout minutes speed by in no time.
